Ultimate Enemies: Elephants and Lions

Eight years in the field documenting two of the greatest symbols of the African continent: elephants and lions. The results will stagger and stun audiences around the world….

By Dereck and Beverly Joubert

Narration by Jeremy Iron

When a young pride of lions gets thrown out of their territory, filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert follow them from the upper reaches of Selinda, where they have grown up hunting hippos. They wander through the backcountry and dry regions, trying desperately to find a territory they can occupy; but each time they are chased away.

One day they come across a paradise, a water hole filled with animals of all kinds; but there are two major obstacles. First the water hole has resident male lions and also there are huge bull elephants that dominate the water hole, chasing all animals away from the precious water. The lions have to get past these opponents to survive.

One day, as two massive bull elephants battle over space and water, the lions see an opportunity. One of the giants collapses, and the lions move in. What follows is a scene that will both move and shock viewers as the lions tackle the handicapped elephant. It is at the same time horrifying and yet one of the most beautiful natural history moments ever filmed. For the elephant it means death, for the lions it means life. With the new realization that they can hunt elephants, comes the key to their survival.

Ultimate Enemies: Elephants and Lions has captured on film for the first time this spectacular battle of wits and strength. With narration by Jeremy Irons, a superbly composed musical score, and creative editing that really does push the boundaries, Ultimate Enemies: Elephants and Lions is another cinematic masterpiece for award-winning producers, Dereck and Beverly Joubert.
