Beverly and Dereck Joubert

Dereck and Beverly Joubert are award-winning filmmakers from Botswana, and National Geographic Explorers in Residence. Their mission is the conservation and understanding of the large predators and key African wildlife species that determine the course of all conservation in Africa. They have been filming, researching, and exploring in Africa for over 25 years. Their coverage of unique predator behavior has resulted in 23 films, 10 books, scientific papers, and many articles for National Geographic magazine. This body of work has resulted in five Emmys, a Peabody, the World Ecology Award, induction into the American Academy of Achievement and the Presidential order of Meritorious Service from the President and government of Botswana. Their latest film, The Last Lions, premiered in February of this year with National Geographic Entertainment in cinemas around the country to great reviews. In 2008 they founded the Big Cats Initiative, at National Geographic as an emergency effort to stop the decline of big cats in Africa and now have projects in 5 counties and a high profile campaign. All the profits from The Last Lions go directly to conservation. Beverly is an acclaimed photographer, and many of her photographs appear in National Geographic magazine and in exhibitions around the world.

Filmmaking for them has always been a way to bring the message of conservation to audiences. Their recent expansion into conservation tourism via their company, Great Plains Conservation is a venture into community/conservation partnerships in Africa and they have achieved bringing the total amount of impacted conservation land under this initiative up to about 1.8 million acres. All their efforts, over a lifetime, as filmmakers, as the Big Cats Initiative and as Great Plains all coincide with one aim: to rehabilitate the environment and return these vast tracts of land to nature and to protect the wild creatures that depend on it.
